Since the 1950Õs the Dead Sea has been dropping in water level at an alarming rate not by climatic changes as much as human consumption in the area. The fresh water source from the Jordan and Yarmouk river that were so detrimental to its survival have been diverted for irrigation . Industries that extract Potash ,salt and magnesium on both sides of the Israeli and Jordanian side today have higher pumping costs.
One idea to save the Dead Sea ,called the Red-Dead is being studied by The World Bank ,a proposal to dig a canal from the Red Sea, more than 100 miles south, to replenish the Dead Sea’s waters. But with costs estimated at up to $15 billion, there’s little optimism it will happen . Environmentalists are warning that without a solution and as the sea continues to drop in level by one meter per year, this ancient body of water could disappear as it is expected to shrink to lose another third of its area over the next century.(Photo by Heidi Levine/Sipa Press).
